Senior Degree Thesis Project
The subject of this exhibit is the Eames chair, first introduced in the 1940’s by Charles and Ray Eames. I have limited my focus to the early designs made from plywood, plastic, and wire mesh. Through a series of posters and color patterns, I want to bring attention to the vision behind the creation of the Eames chair.
I have chosen to use simple, yet complex circle shapes to demonstrate the relationship between the various Eames patterns and their application to industrial design. Why Eames chairs? They are a perfect example of form and function, of architecture used for comfort. They also demonstrate that an object can be mass-produced without compromising the designer’s vision.

This project has sparked my interest in the design and function of all chairs. I no longer see them as ordinary.
I look at them as the product of someone’s vision and try to see their place in people’s lives. Who we are is reflected in what and where we sit. I also find myself paying closer attention to the materials that inspire their creation.
